KARACHI: The fuel subsidy app launched by the Sindh government was taken offline on Tuesday after alleged hacking attempts. This was revealed by Sindh’s excise minister the other day.

Mukesh Kumar Chawla told a news conference that the province’s online fuel subsidy portal for motorcyclists was temporarily taken offline after repeated hacking attempts, but had been restored after security measures were applied.

It may be recalled that the fuel subsidy app, launched on Monday by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, allows registered motorcyclists to claim a Rs.2,000 subsidy by submitting their computerised national identity card (CNIC) and bank account details on the portal. Users receive an automated confirmation after registration.

Officials said thousands of users experienced hours-long outages when the portal first went live. Chawla said about 15,000 people have registered so far, 3,000 had successfully applied for the subsidy and Rs.2,000 each had been transferred to 1,500 recipients via Sindh Bank accounts.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the province has about 6.7 million registered motorcycles and that owners will be eligible for Rs.2,000 each per month.
