Zohran Mamdani, a rising figure on the American left, officially assumed office as New York City’s mayor on Thursday, marking the beginning of a term likely to involve frequent clashes with President Donald Trump.

As the calendar turned to 2026, Mamdani was sworn in shortly after midnight at a disused subway station beneath City Hall.

At 34, he becomes the first Muslim mayor in the city’s history. According to The New York Times, Mamdani took his oath on the Holy Quran, another historic first for New York.

His office said the unconventional location symbolized his focus on working-class New Yorkers, a central theme of his campaign that highlighted rising living costs. Calling the moment “the honour and privilege of a lifetime,” Mamdani pledged to deliver meaningful change.

Despite his rapid rise from relative obscurity, questions remain about whether he can fulfill his bold promises, including rent freezes, free public transport, and universal childcare.

Political observers note that after elections, symbolism quickly gives way to expectations of tangible results.

President Trump’s response to Mamdani’s leadership may prove pivotal. Although Trump has sharply criticized him in the past, the two reportedly held unexpectedly cordial discussions at the White House in November.

Analysts caution, however, that tensions could flare, particularly over immigration enforcement, as Mamdani has vowed to shield immigrant communities from federal crackdowns.

Mamdani’s private swearing-in was conducted by New York Attorney General Letitia James, while a larger public inauguration featuring progressive leaders is scheduled later in the day.

Born in Uganda to an Indian-origin family, Mamdani moved to New York as a child and later served in the state assembly. To offset his limited experience, he has assembled a team of veteran advisors as he begins governing America’s largest city.
