Streaming platform Netflix has introduced video games on TV, allowing users to use their mobile phones as controllers and enjoy games on the big screen.

Netflix’s Co-CEO Greg Peters announced at the Bloomberg Screentime Conference that the company is opening a new chapter in entertainment by bringing its games to TV screens.

“We are developing social games that families and friends can play together,” he said.

Until now, Netflix games were only available on mobile devices, but under this new initiative, users will need a smart TV or a streaming device like Roku to play. To turn the phone into a controller during gameplay, users will need to scan a QR code.

Netflix has been offering games for the past four years, but with the launch of TV gaming, it has taken a significant step forward in this space. The company views gaming as an essential part of its future growth and is expanding its cloud server capacity to smoothly manage increased traffic.

Head of Netflix’s gaming division, Leanne Loombe, shared that many film and TV companies have attempted to enter the gaming world but failed due to short-term planning. Netflix has proven that consistency and creative thinking are key to success in this field.

Co-CEO Greg Peters reiterated their focus on social games that can be played on a large scale via TV, noting there is still a lot of room for growth in this area.

All games currently being offered will be free of charge, including the LEGO Party game, which is typically sold for around $40.
