Meta has announced that starting this week, it will introduce special Teen Accounts for younger users on Facebook and Messenger in Pakistan. These accounts aim to provide a safer experience for teenagers using these platforms.
According to Meta, this feature has already been available globally on Instagram and is now being extended to Facebook and Messenger worldwide.
Meta said that Teen Accounts were first introduced a year ago as a significant step to protect younger users on its apps. Since then, millions of young users have transitioned to this system across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
These accounts include automated safety features designed to address parents’ major concerns, such as controlling whom teens can contact, what content they can see, and how they spend their time online.
The safety measures in Teen Accounts ensure through automated systems that young users interact with appropriate contacts, view suitable content, and manage their time effectively.
Meta acknowledged that while more work remains, Teen Accounts are encouraging parents by providing greater confidence and reassurance about their children’s online experiences.
The company added that it is continuously exploring new ways to support parents and protect young users.
Starting this week, Meta will begin transitioning new users as well as existing younger users of Facebook and Messenger in Pakistan to Teen Accounts.
Last month, Reuters reported that flaws in Meta’s AI policies could allow bots to engage in inappropriate conversations with children and share misleading medical information.
Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to invest billions in large-scale AI data centers to develop ‘super intelligence,’ competing to hire expert engineers.
