In response to the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices, transporters across the country on Tuesday increased fares on all long-distance, inter-district, intra-city and local routes, including the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The fares for local and long-distance transport services have been revised immediately after the government increased petrol prices by Rs8 per liter and diesel prices by Rs10 per liter.
The fare for a journey between Lahore and Karachi or Quetta has increased by Rs300 to Rs5,800, although some passengers have complained that they are sometimes being charged up to Rs6,000. The new fares for other cities are as follows: Rawalpindi Rs2,800, Multan Rs2,500, Peshawar Rs3,300.
Pakistan Railways has also decided to increase fares, and a formal circular in this regard is likely to be issued in the next 24 hours. Intra-city transport such as wagons, taxis, Suzuki vans, rickshaws and motorcycle services (e.g. Bikeya) have also increased the rates of their services significantly.
Due to the increase in the cost of transport, the prices of daily necessities, especially food, fruits and vegetables, are also expected to increase.
