The government of Punjab has decided to solarize all higher and secondary schools of the province, the media reported on Saturday.
As per the details, the Department of School Education, Punjab, has announced a shift to all higher and secondary schools of the province to solar energy.
As many as 861 higher and secondary schools are operational in Punjab, 21 are located in Lahore, of which four are already shifted to solar energy.
In a notification, the Department of School Education sought complete data of schools that will be shifted to solar energy.
Sources said that some schools shifted to solar energy on a self-help basis.
The notification further said that strict action will be taken against the heads of those schools who fail to provide data.
Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali said that the government has been trying to convert schools to solar energy for the last five years, but due to a shortage of funds, some schools shifted to solar energy on a self-help basis.
Rana Liaquat Ali said that some heads of schools purchased solar panels after collecting Rs 15,000 from teachers.
He demanded that the government provide free solar panels to all the schools in the province.
