After the incident of prisoners escaping from Karachi’s Malir Jail, one prisoner was brought back to jail by his own mother, as reported by national media.
On Monday night, the situation at Karachi’s Malir Jail deteriorated when tremors from an earthquake were felt in various parts of the city. During the tremors, more than 200 prisoners escaped from the jail, many of whom were later re-arrested.
The Malir Jail administration confirmed that prisoners were brought out of their barracks on Monday night to avoid damage from the earthquake. The tremors caused chaos, during which prisoners clashed with police personnel, snatched weapons, and opened fire. Over 200 prisoners escaped during this time.
According to DIG Prisons Karachi, Muhammad Hassan Sehto, during the earthquake tremors, a large number of prisoners exited the barracks, broke the gate of the jail yard, and assaulted jail police personnel.
Sources said that prisoners snatched weapons from the police inside the jail, and both the police and prisoners exchanged gunfire.
According to media reports, when one prisoner escaped and returned home, his mother not only reasoned with him but also immediately handed him over to the police.

Outside the jail, the prisoner’s mother handed him over to the police and kept pleading with the officers to forgive her son’s mistakes. The mother stood before the police officers with folded hands, pleading: “My son made a mistake, and I have brought him to you myself. Please be kind and do not harm him.”
The mother stated that she is a widow and this is her eldest son. He was sentenced because of a photo with a friend on a mobile phone. She said she walked a long distance on foot to hand him over to the police.
