TEHRAN: More than 35 people have been killed while several injured in a stampede as Iranians flocked to the hometown of Qasem Soleimani for his burial, state media reported.
Qasem Soleimani was being buried in his hometown in Kerman, millions of people already rushed from different parts of Iran to attend the funeral. The streets were tightly packed when the stampede disrupted, exact numbers are unconfirmed but according to state media sources, at least 35 are dead while more than 50 injured.
The massive number of mourners in the hometown of Qasem Soleimani alone matched what was seen in Tehran, Qom, Mashhad, and Ahvaz combined.
The assassination of Soleimani set off an escalating war of words between Iran and the United States. In Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani on Monday warned Trump to “never threaten” Iran, after the US leader issued a US strike list of 52 targets in the Islamic republic.
