An intense heatwave is likely to hit parts of Punjab from April 13 (tomorrow), with temperatures in southern Punjab expected to rise 6-8°C above normal, while upper Punjab may experience a 4-6°C increase from April 14 to 18.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has warned that besides day time, nights will also remain unusually hot, with risks of dust storms and strong winds due to extreme heat.
Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabil Javed has directed commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert. Citizens, especially children, women, and the elderly, have been advised to take precautions, avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and stay hydrated.
Farmers have also urged to take preemptive measures to protect crops and livestock. Meanwhile, Rescue 1122 has been put on alert to handle heatstroke and dehydration emergencies.
The PDMA will set up relief camps in urban areas, providing clean water, ORS, and first aid. Mobile health teams will also be deployed to manage heat-related illnesses.
Authorities further warned that rising temperatures could accelerate glacial melt in northern regions, potentially leading to water surges.
