Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has proposed increasing imports from the United States to counter the American tariffs, as reported by national media.
Speaking on Geo News program Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, former finance minister Miftah Ismail said that instead of asking the US to reduce duties on Pakistan, the country should try to purchase more goods from the US, as the main reason behind the additional tariffs imposed on Pakistan is America’s trade deficit.
Miftah Ismail said that Pakistan could also fulfill Trump’s political need by releasing a person who has been imprisoned for the past 10–12 years.
He added that if oil prices remain low in the global market and commodity prices fall, Pakistan would also benefit—but in the meantime, it is crucial to strike a trade deal with the US immediately.
It is worth noting that recently President Donald Trump announced retaliatory tariffs on various countries including Pakistan, China, and Turkey. Earlier, the US President announced a 29% tariff on Pakistani products, which will come into effect from April 9.
