Sumona Chakravarti has denied rumors about her breakup with Kapil Sharma, clarifying that there was no fallout between them, as reported by Indian media on Sunday.
Speaking on SCREEN’S The Suvir Saran Show, she explained that their professional association lasted a remarkable 10 years across different networks. “Most marriages don’t even last that long (laughs), but our onscreen one did. Every year, we used to take a break around June-July.” She stated.
“We wrapped up our last season on Sony in 2023, and then Kapil went on his US tour. The next thing I heard, he was bringing his show to Netflix. Honestly, there was no conversation between us about it. It’s not like we picked up the phone to discuss it,” she added.
Sumona also clarified that she is not personally close to Kapil outside of work and doesn’t miss being part of his show. “I’ve learned not to take work home and vice versa. Otherwise, it can be tough,” she shared. However, she acknowledged the immense popularity of The Kapil Sharma Show and its widespread impact.
Addressing criticism about misogyny in the show’s content, Sumona defended it, emphasizing that it is purely scripted entertainment. “It’s just acting; Kapil isn’t insulting Sumona. There’s a difference between the characters Bittu and Manju and real life. Yes, we have a responsibility, but people should understand the distinction between reel and real,” she stated.
According to Indian media, Sumona first joined Kapil Sharma on Comedy Nights With Kapil in 2013 and continued in The Kapil Sharma Show until its last season in 2023. While she is absent from The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, which features Kapil, Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, and Archana Puran Singh, she remains appreciative of the journey she had on the show.
