What is a meteor shower?
A meteor shower occurs when numerous meteors, often referred to as “shooting stars,” blaze across the night sky from what appears to be a single point of origin. Despite their nickname, shooting stars have no connection to actual stars; they are fragments of celestial debris, known as meteoroids.
Most meteor showers originate from comets, whose icy surfaces sublimate into gas under the sun’s heat, forming their iconic tails. When Earth passes through the trail of debris left behind by a comet, meteoroids enter our atmosphere, creating the dazzling streaks of light we observe. Although these streaks are fleeting, they leave an indelible impression.
Meteor showers are named after the constellation in which their radiant— the apparent point of origin— lies, highlighting their connection to the stars above.
