Dubai authorities have ramped up their efforts to curb begging across the city during the holy month of Ramadan, deploying special task forces and increasing surveillance to address the issue.
According to local media reports on Thursday, law enforcement agencies have taken strict action to prevent begging, which has become a growing concern since the start of Ramadan.
In a recent operation, Dubai police apprehended nine individuals found soliciting alms in public spaces. These arrests were carried out by dedicated teams specifically assigned to track and detain beggars in different areas of the city.
Officials have issued a stern warning, stating that those caught engaging in begging activities could face legal consequences, including a jail term of up to three months and a fine of 5,000 dirhams.
To tackle the problem more effectively, Dubai police have urged residents to report any instances of begging through multiple channels, including the “Police Eye” mobile application and the 901 helpline. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to eliminate begging and educate the public on the importance of responsible giving.
Ahead of Ramadan, authorities introduced the “Donate Wisely” campaign to safeguard residents from fraudulent beggars who take advantage of public generosity. The campaign encourages citizens to contribute only to officially recognized charities and to immediately report any suspicious begging activities.
Law enforcement officials have cautioned that many individuals engaged in begging use fabricated stories to elicit sympathy, often positioning themselves near busy streets, mosques, and other high-footfall areas.
By promoting responsible donations, authorities aim to ensure that financial aid reaches those genuinely in need while protecting the community from deceptive practices.
