Bollywood’s renowned actress Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency has been banned in Bangladesh, reportedly due to the ongoing strained relations between India and Bangladesh.

According to a report by Indian Express on Wednesday, the film, which is set to release in Indian theaters, depicts the controversial period of the Emergency in India declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975.

Reports citing sources close to the matter indicate that the decision to ban the film is primarily linked to political dynamics rather than the content itself. The film showcases India’s role during Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence, highlighting India’s support for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of Bangladesh.

It also covers the assassination of Rahman, which is seen as a contributing factor to the ban. Initially, Emergency was scheduled for release in India on September 6, 2024, but was delayed due to a lack of clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

As per Indian regulations, films must receive certification from the CBFC before they can be shown in theaters. After resolving issues with the CBFC, the film’s release was postponed once again due to various controversies. It is now set to release in India on January 17, 2025.
