The Sindh government has announced a public holiday on December 27 each year to commemorate the death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto. However, the country has never observed a nationwide public holiday on this occasion.
This year, the Sindh government has once again declared December 27, 2024, a public holiday across the province to honor the legacy of Benazir Bhutto.
The federal government has also announced a special train service from Lahore to Larkana for the death anniversary, while the Sindh government has requested the federal government to provide a helicopter for air surveillance during the event. The Sindh Home Department wrote a letter to the federal Interior Ministry to request the helicopter for surveillance in Garhi Khuda Bux Bhutto, Larkana.
Some sources have suggested that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) may urge Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to announce a nationwide public holiday to honor Benazir Bhutto on her 17th death anniversary. However, no confirmation has been provided in this regard so far.
Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination:
Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was assassinated on December 27, 2007, during a rally in Rawalpindi. A gunman shot her as she was leaving the rally, followed by a suicide bombing that killed her and at least 24 others.
The attack shocked Pakistan and drew international condemnation, highlighting the ongoing threats posed by extremist groups in the region. The immediate aftermath saw widespread protests and mourning across the country, as Bhutto was a significant figure in Pakistani politics and the first woman to head a democratic government in a majority Muslim nation.
The investigation into her assassination has been fraught with controversy and speculation. Initially, the Pakistani government under General Pervez Musharraf blamed the attack on Baitullah Mehsud, the then-leader of the Pakistani Taliban, although he denied any involvement.
