In yet another honor killing incident, a grade 17 female teacher was killed in New Saeedabad tehsil of Sindh’s Matiari District.
It should be noted that Karo Kari, a type of honor killing is quite common in Sindh.
Afshan was allegedly shot by her husband, Imdad Jamali, at Bakar Jamalia Higher Secondary School. Imdad accused her of having an extramarital affair and admitted to authorities that he killed her after she refused to end her alleged relationship. He claimed that her unwillingness to “change her behavior” pushed him to commit the act.
However, Afshan’s father, Haji Muhammad Jamal, who resides in Dubai, has refuted the allegations against his daughter. He blamed Imdad, along with Imdad’s father, Wazir Jamali, and brother, Darya Khan, for orchestrating the murder out of greed for property.
He said that Afshan was not involved in any affair and had recently received Rs200,000 from him, which included her salary.
Haji Muhammad further revealed that Imdad had been pressuring Afshan for additional money, and when she refused, he resorted to violence. Afshan, who had recently passed the Sindh Public Service Commission examination, was working as a lecturer and was married to Imdad, with whom she had three children.
Afshan had previously lived in Dubai before her marriage. Despite the gravity of the case, the police have yet to file a formal First Information Report (FIR).
