Karachi Police on Monday said they had arrested 65-year-old gang leader accused of looting traders using rickshaws in the provincial capital, home to over 20 million people.
The suspect, Rahim Bux, was released from prison in 2018 after serving a 20-year sentence for a Rs7 million ($25,000) bank robbery in 1998. Following his release, he formed the “Rickshaw Gang,” according to police.
“Bux formed a group of four and resumed criminal activities after his release from jail. Acting on a tip-off, we arrested all gang members last night (Sunday),” said Mumtaz Khan Marwat, the officer in charge of Shah Latif Town police station.
The gang reportedly targeted traders leaving cattle markets with large amounts of cash. They would lure victims into their rickshaws or follow them on the vehicles before robbing them at gunpoint.
Police added that Bux coordinated the operations, supervising the robberies from a designated location before fleeing with his accomplices in the same rickshaw.
Bux has faced multiple criminal cases in Karachi and Larkana divisions.
