Once the heaviest man alive, Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, a young man from Saudi Arabia who weighed 610 kilograms, experienced a life-changing transformation when Saudi Arabia’s former King Abdullah offered him medical treatment that led to an unprecedented weight loss of 542 kilograms.
Khalid’s journey began in 2013 when he had been bedridden for over three years, with his weight reaching 610 kilograms. His health was so dire that he was entirely dependent on his family and friends for even his basic needs, according to a report in Dmarge.
His situation caught the attention of King Abdullah, who then initiated a comprehensive and costly plan to save Khalid’s life.
Medical treatment
Born on February 28, 1991, Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari was recognized as the heaviest man alive in August 2013, weighing 610 kg (1,345 lbs).
After King Abdullah’s intervention in 2013, Khalid began receiving advanced medical care at no cost. He was transported from his home in Jazan to King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh using a forklift and a specially designed bed. A team of 30 medical professionals was assembled to care for him.
Under their dedicated supervision, a rigorous treatment plan was developed, combining surgical and therapeutic approaches. Khalid underwent gastric bypass surgery, along with a customized diet and exercise plan tailored to his needs. Remarkably, he lost nearly half of his body weight within just six months.
By the end of his treatment in 2023, Khalid had shed over 542 kilograms, an extraordinary achievement. His weight was reduced from 610 kilograms to just 63.5 kilograms.
