Thousands of people, including medics and members of civil society, took to the streets in West Bengal on Wednesday night to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata last week.
The week-long wave of protests, ignited by the brutal rape and killing of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last Friday, culminated in a “Reclaim the Night” march.
While most of the protests were peaceful, there were some violent incidents. At RG Kar Hospital, where the doctor was killed, a few unidentified individuals broke in and looted the emergency room. In response, police used tear gas to disperse the unruly crowd, and some police vehicles were damaged.
Similar protests also took place in other Indian cities, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune.
What happened to the Kolkata doctor?
On August 9, the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, bearing multiple injuries, was discovered in a government teaching hospital in Kolkata. Initially, hospital authorities informed the family that the victim had taken her own life. However, according to lawyer and women’s rights activist Vrinda Grover, the autopsy later confirmed that the doctor had been raped and murdered.
