The federal ombudsperson has pronounced the director of sports of Sir Syed Engineering University guilty of harassing a woman official of the Pakistan Hockey Federation during the Prime Minister’s Hockey Talent Hunt Programme, a private TV channel reported.
The four-page verdict states Mubasher Mukhtar harassed the Makkadas Fatima and behaved unethically, slapping him with a Rs100,000 fine and a three-year salary increment cut.
“For having harassed the Complainant I impose the following minor penalties on the accused: stoppage of increment for three years under Section 4(4)(i)(b) of the Act along with compensation of Rs100,000 to be paid to the Complainant under section under Section 4(4)(i)(d).”
Fatima moved ombudsman after she was denied justice in September 2023.
Harassment cases are not uncommon in Pakistani universities. In most cases, faculty members are involved in the harassment of female students, often threatening them with poor marks or offering them the promise of better grades and other favors in exchange for compliance.
