A group of Hindu extremists attacked the Raza Jama Masjid in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, India, according to Indian media reports. The incident occurred before the arrival of former Lok Sabha member Sambhaji Raje to the district.
The attackers reportedly burned the Quran and completely demolished the mosque. Surrounding homes and shops were also damaged in the attack. Local Muslims protested in response to the incident.
Supporters of Sambhaji Raje allegedly began throwing stones at the mosque and attacking local Muslims. Indian media sources report that over 40 Muslims were injured in the assault.
Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, strongly condemned the attack and demanded strict action against those involved.
According to sources, since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power under Narendra Modi’s leadership, over 1,000 mosques and other sacred sites have reportedly been targeted.
Local authorities have not yet reported any legal action taken against the attackers.
