Students who completed their FSc (Intermediate) with a pre-medical subjects are now eligible to enroll in BS Engineering programs, following new guidelines from the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
According to a report by Dawn, the PEC has approved a conditional 8-week curriculum designed to bridge the academic gap for these students, allowing them to pursue engineering studies. Dr. Nasir Mahmood Khan, PEC Registrar, noted that the decision was made after consultations with specialists and university vice-chancellors.
He highlighted a concerning trend: while Pakistani engineering institutes used to graduate over 30,000 engineers annually, this figure has dropped significantly, with nearly 10,000 fewer admissions in a single year.
As a result, some universities have had to close their engineering departments due to insufficient student numbers. The PEC has directed universities to start accepting pre-medical students into engineering programs beginning with the upcoming fall admission session.
This policy aims to tackle declining enrollment in engineering disciplines and support the ongoing development of a skilled engineering workforce in Pakistan.
