Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s bail plea was dismissed by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in May riots cases on Tuesday.
Judge Khalid Arshad announced the ruling regarding the case related to attack on Jinnah House, Askari Tower, and the Shadman Police Station.
On July 6, following the conclusion of the parties’ arguments, the court had set aside its decision regarding the bail requests.
During the concluding arguments on behalf of the prosecution, Special Prosecutors Rana Abdul Jabbar and Rana Azhar opposed the bail requests, while Barrister Salman Safdar pleaded on behalf of Imran Khan and argued in favor of bail.
Earlier, on August 11, 2023, an ATC had canceled Imran Khan’s pre-arrest bail in seven cases because of his absence—he was detained after being found guilty in the Toshakhana case.
However, on Imran Khan’s appeal, the Lahore High Court reversed the ATC’s ruling and restored his release requests.
In four cases involving attacks near Zaman Park, the murder of PTI activist Zile Shah, the burning of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz office in Model Town, and an incident involving a container at Kalma Chowk, another ATC granted Imran Khan temporary release a few months prior.
Last week, on July 3, a district and sessions court in Islamabad acquitted the PTI founder along with all other defendants in a case registered at Islamabad’s Aabpara police station.
