RAWALPINDI: The electric bus service in Rawalpindi is set to launch next year to alleviate commuting challenges faced by residents. The project aims to resolve commuting issues by introducing six routes, including one from Taxila, Wah Cantt, IJ Principal Road to Octori 26, and another connecting Daultala with Rawalpindi. Maintenance work on the Metrobus tracks will be carried out from June to December this year.
This announcement was made by Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan during a press conference on Thursday. He mentioned that he has been regularly visiting Rawalpindi under the special instructions of Chief Minister Mariam Nawaz Sharif to address ongoing transportation and traffic management issues in the city.
The minister added that consultations with members of the national and provincial assemblies are also underway. Local MNAs and MPAs have been consulted to review the routes.
He noted that the Metrobus service was introduced in the city eight to nine years ago, but the previous government did not invest in its maintenance or repair. The repair work on the Metrobus track will begin in June and is expected to be completed by December.
