The ICC has appointed Sana Mir, a revered figure in Pakistan cricket, as the ambassador for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
With an illustrious career spanning 14 years, Sana boasts of 226 international appearances, including 137 as captain. Her prowess as an all-rounder is evident with 2432 runs and 240 wickets to her name.
Eagerly anticipating the competition, Sana will closely monitor the ten participating teams and their players throughout the two-week tournament. The event, scheduled from April 25th to May 7th in Abu Dhabi, promises intense battles as teams vie for two coveted spots in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later this year.
Expressing her delight in the role of ambassador, Sana emphasizes the significance of the tournament in providing exposure to Associate Member teams and their players. She acknowledges the escalating competitiveness within women’s cricket and the abundance of quality players among the ten nations in the Qualifier.
Drawing from her rich experience as both captain and player, Sana recalls fond memories of past qualifying events, notably her standout performance in the 2008 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifying Series.
The ten participating teams are divided into two groups: Group A comprises Scotland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda, and the USA, while Group B consists of Ireland, the Netherlands, the UAE, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, with the winners securing their berths in Bangladesh.
Additionally, there is a revision in the timing for night matches, now scheduled to commence at 19h30 local time instead of 19h00.
The tournament kicks off on April 25th at the Tolerance Oval and Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
