Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is currently under speculation regarding the potential appointment of Sanam Javaid as the opposition leader in Punjab.

These discussions have gained momentum amid reports suggesting that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice-President Maryam Nawaz is being considered for the position of Chief Minister.

Sources within PTI have indicated that certain factions are endorsing Sanam Javaid for the crucial role of opposition leader in Punjab. The proposed plan involves bringing Sanam into the assembly through a reserved seat. However, uncertainty lingers regarding whether PTI will be granted reserved seats for this purpose.

Sanam Javaid, known for her vocal criticism of PML-N leadership, has a notable background, having been previously behind bars due to her alleged involvement in the May 9 riots.

These considerations have emerged following a public announcement by PTI leader Barrister Saif, outlining the party’s intent to play a significant opposition role in Punjab and at the federal level. Initially permitted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to contest elections from NA-119, NA-120, and PP-125, Sanam Javaid later withdrew from the NA-119 candidacy, where she was initially set to compete against Maryam Nawaz.

With PTI securing 92 seats in the National Assembly and 116 seats in Punjab, the party is currently navigating decisions regarding the allocation of reserved seats. Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz, who has been nominated for the Chief Minister’s office, has secured the PP-159 Lahore-I seat.

In contrast, PTI has also put forward the nomination of Mian Aslam Iqbal as a candidate for the Punjab Chief Minister’s office if the party decides to form the government in the province. Reports suggest that Maryam Nawaz, following her nomination for the office of Punjab Chief Minister, is presently undergoing briefings on development and administrative matters in the region.
