In a recent development, the Punjab government has decided to withdraw the house arrest order imposed on Khadija Shah, the renowned fashion designer, daughter of a former finance minister, and a supporter of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party.
The Lahore Deputy Commissioner, Rafia Haider, issued the detention order on November 17, invoking the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance. The order was initially for 30 days and was justified on the grounds of maintaining “law and order in the provincial capital.”
The detention order came in the wake of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) granting post-arrest bail to Khadija Shah on November 16. The bail was related to the fourth case arising from the May 9 riots, for which she was being prosecuted. The decision to detain Ms. Shah was made on November 15, prompting a wave of discussions and debates regarding the charges against her.
Khadija Shah, who also happens to be the granddaughter of a former army chief, has been facing a terrorism case linked to her alleged involvement in the May 9 riots. The withdrawal of the house arrest order raises questions about the nature of the charges against her and the evidence presented in the cases.
The Punjab government’s law officer is expected to present the PTI supporter’s order regarding the withdrawal of her detention notice to the court. This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of legal proceedings and concerns about the balance between maintaining public order and protecting individual rights.
