The government of Punjab on Sunday issued a mandate requiring citizens in 10 districts affected by smog to wear face masks whenever they venture outside.
Mohsin Naqvi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), revealed that the decision was prompted by the deteriorating air quality in the province. His statement emphasized the collective responsibility of prioritizing health and urged citizens to adhere to the guidelines for a safer community.
The order is set to be in effect from November 20 to November 26 in the following districts: Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, Sialkot, and Mandi Bahauddin.
Highlighting the severe and imminent threat to public health posed by the high levels of air pollution due to smog, the mandate stressed the mandatory adoption of safety measures for the prevention and control of airborne diseases in Punjab.

According to the Air Quality Index, Lahore recorded an unhealthy AQI of 203 at 1 pm on the specified day. The primary pollutant was PM2.5, a fine particulate matter known to enter the lungs and bloodstream, leading to serious health issues.
In response to escalating air pollution and a surge in conjunctivitis cases associated with the smog, the government had previously imposed a smart lockdown in affected areas on November 18. This involved the closure of all public and private schools, colleges, universities, and offices, with exemptions granted to essential businesses such as bakeries, pharmacies, gas stations, immunization clinics, e-commerce hubs, postal and courier services, utility outlets, telecom and cellular network hubs, and public transportation.
