LHC adjourns hearing of curbing smog in Punjab for 9 days

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has adjourned the case of curbing increasing air pollution and smog in the Punjab province for 9 days.

Justice Mamoon Rasheed Sheikh conducted hearing of the case related to introducing electric vehicles and smog.

The judge, during the proceedings remarked that birds have become endangered species in Lahore.

The judge asked, “Do you know why vultures are dying?”

The lawyer said that they die after eating animals with high doses of medicines.

The judge further questioned about the plan of producing sulfur from petroleum over which, the counsel told that the incumbent government was working on this matter.

Subsequently, the court directed the petroleum ministry to submit a report on the steps taken to make fuel as environment-friendly.

For the past 4 years, smog, rightly being called the fifth season of Lahore, has deprived the people of sunshine and dusk-hour charm as layers of toxic smoke engulf horizon from November to February.

Lahore has been ranked as the second most polluted city in the world, which records air pollution levels across the globe. 

The smog is caused by a lack of rain and immense pollution. Smoke from vehicles, factories, and burning of the remains of crops could one of the major factors behind the dense smog.
