LAHORE: Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) has appointed Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan as the party’s President of Azad Jammu Kashmir.
IPP Central Secretary General Aamir Kayani issued the notification with the approval of the Patron-in-Chief and party President.
Sardar Tanveer Ilyas served as the former prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for one year till April 2023 until he was dismissed in a contempt of court case.
He distanced himself from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after the violent protests on May 9 this year and later joined the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).
Sardar Tanveer Ilyas was elected to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from LA-15 Bagh-II as a candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the 2021 Azad Kashmir general election.
On 18 April 2022, Ilyas was elected as the 14th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He succeeded Abdul Qayyum Khan Niazi, who resigned to avoid a vote of no confidence.
On 11 April 2023, Ilyas was disqualified from being a member of the legislative assembly when he was found guilty of contempt of court by the High Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He ceased to hold the office of the AJK PM.
He has served as an advisor on investment to Chief Minister of Punjab. He has also served as Chairman of Punjab Trade and Investment Board (PTIB).
He was also the president of PTI Azad Kashmir. He bid farewell to PTI after disagreeing with the policies of party chairman Imran Khan.
Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan is also the founding leader and member of the executive committee of the IPP.
