Various social media posts have claimed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has removed Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), from the list of registered political parties in the country. However, these claims are false, and the news about PTI being removed from the list is fake.
On July 10th, a YouTuber from his verified Twitter handle said that “Breaking News: Election Commission has removed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf from the list of political parties. The Election Commission is so hasty that it removed PTI even before the next election, from the list of parties contesting the upcoming elections.”
Siddique Jan (@SdqJaan) July 10, 2023
This tweet has been retweeted nearly 10,000 times and has received over 24,000 likes.
Later, the same user quoted their own retweet and claimed, “Election Commission has updated the list, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has been included in the list of registered political parties. Now it is being said that PTI’s name was mistakenly removed.”
On July 10th, another verified Twitter user wrote, “Now they have removed PTI’s name from the party list and made Khan Sahab the chairman of some liberal nationalist movement.”

Similar claims were also shared on Facebook. However, the truth is quite different.
Contrary to these claims, the Election Commission of Pakistan, as the responsible authority for conducting elections in the country, has neither removed PTI from its list of registered political parties nor given Imran Khan’s name to any other party.
Haroon Khan Shinwari, Additional Director General Media of the Election Commission of Pakistan, confirmed in a telephone conversation with Geo Fact Check that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is still listed on the ECP’s website.
He stated, “The party’s name has not been changed. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf still exists, along with 167 other parties, and their heads are also present.”
He further explained that delisting a political party is a legal process, and the ECP cannot do it on its own.
He shared a confidential document of the Election Commission, which contains a list of all political parties that can participate in the upcoming elections. The list includes 168 political parties, and Imran Khan’s name is mentioned as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
The list of all political parties is available on the official website of the Election Commission of Pakistan and can be viewed there.
