ISLAMABAD: Advocate Sher Afzal Marwat has expressed serious concerns over the detention of PTI leader Shehryar Afridi in a “death cell” at the Adiala Jail.
During the hearing of a case against the arrest of the PTI leader, Marwat requested Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir to transfer Afridi to an A-class jail.
He also requested the court to order a medical check-up of his client, adding that the former minister fell at the time of his arrest due to which his “left arm is paralysed”.
The judge subsequently directed prison officials to submit Afridi’s medical report by June 2 and adjourned the hearing. The order was passed on a petition filed by Afridi’s brother seeking the PTI leader’s bail and better medical facilities in jail.
The PTI leader was arrested on May 16. According to the party, the ex-minister was “picked up” from Islamabad allegedly along with his wife.
“Ex-interior minister Shehryar Afridi has been picked up this time, not alone but along with his wife who has no political affiliation. This is happening under the current fascist regime,” the PTI Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s official Twitter account had informed.
Afridi was reportedly arrested under Section 3 of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance 1960, which enables the government to arrest persons “acting in any manner prejudicial to public safety”.
