LAHORE: Governor Punjab Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman has finalized a notification to de-notify Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, a private TV channel reported on Thursday evening while citing reliable sources.
According to the sources, the Chief Minister will be de-notified by the Punjab Governor today. The notification to de-notify the Chief Minister will be issued by the Governor of Punjab.
The decision to de-notify the Chief Minister was taken in a meeting of the PDM parties, held at the Governor House on Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had said that Chaudhry Parvez Elahi had “constitutionally” ceased to be the Punjab chief minister after skipping the vote of confidence.
On December 19, Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman had asked Elahi to take a vote of confidence by 4pm yesterday. However, Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan had disposed of the governor’s order, saying that the instructions were “against the Constitution and Rules of Procedure”.
The speaker also adjourned the PA session till December 23 – the same day the ruling coalition intends to dissolve the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Talking to media in Lahore, Sanaullah said Punjab governor Balighur Rehman had asked the CM to take a vote of confidence by Wednesday. Due to the fact that he did not comply, “according to the constitution, Elahi is no longer the chief minister”.
He said that the governor’s notification de-notifying Elahi as the chief minister is now just a formality, and as soon as the governor gives the order, it will be implemented immediately.
