ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is reported to have decided to approach Supreme Court with plea to ensure verification of its members’ resignations from the National Assembly.
Multiple media reports suggested that the former ruling party decided to move to the apex court after coming to know about, what is called, ‘malicious intentions’ of the Speaker National Assembly’ who prorogued the session of the House when approached by PTI for verification of resignations of its MNAs.
MM News has learnt that on the directives of the party leadership, legal experts have started preparations of the petition which would later be filed in the Supreme Court.

It may be recalled that soon after the November 17 announcement by PTI Chairman Imran Khan to dissolve Punjab and KP assemblies, and quit Sindh and Balochistan assemblies as part of his push for snap elections, the party had decided that every MNA would appear before the Speaker NA in person and verify his resignation.
For this sole purpose, the PTI has had written a letter to National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to seek time for lawmakers’ resignations. PTI Vice-President Shah Mehmood Qureshi was reportedly tasked to write a letter to the NA speaker to seek time for MPs visit to the National Assembly for the verification process of their resignations.

PTI MNAs, it may also be recalled, had decided to resign from National Assembly after April 9 vote of no trust move proved successful against Imran Khan. The resignations had been accepted by then Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri.
However, Raja Pervez Ashraf after becoming Speaker not only reversed the decision of Qasim Suri, but decided to accept the resignations in phases and hold by-polls in those constituencies.

The strategy of the PDM-led government, however, backfired as PTI won majority seats in the July by-elections. Since then, the process of verification and acceptance of resignations remains incomplete till to date.
