American tech giant Google has registered itself as a company with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), paving way for other multi-national companies to open offices in the country.
The tech giant has registered itself with the SECP as in line with the “Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguards) Rules, 2021”, social media companies had to open offices in the country.
Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Syed Aminul Haque said following the registration of the American multinational technology company, more social media sites will follow suit.
“TikTok will have an office in Pakistan soon. Companies are still hesitant because of mistrust and uneven policies,” he claimed, “despite his ministry’s assurances that it will help foreign businesses fully.”
An official of the company confirmed that the liaison office had been opened, while a SECP spokesperson said the company “has been registered as a foreign company” in Pakistan.
A liaison office means an office of a foreign company established for promotion of products, provision of technical advice and assistance, exploring the possibility of joint collaboration and export promotion.
“We have recently opened a liaison office in Pakistan to explore business opportunities, better market our products and services locally and support the country’s fast growing tech ecosystem,” Google spokesperson was quoted as saying in Business Recorder.
According to Pakistan’s government’s social media regulations, firms are now required to register, and Google did so in this case.

If Google’s server is built in Pakistan, data will be secure. Even now, all businesses, including social media platforms, store their data outside of Pakistan.
