KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has written to the government of Sindh and has sought it’s for the holding local government (LG) polls in the seven districts of Karachi.
In its letter, the ECP stated expressed its desire to immediately hold LG polls in Sindh in order to dispense its constitutional duty. The commission directed the Sindh government to submit the reply by October 31.
In the letter, the ECP also questioned the Sindh government about the security and other arrangements for the LG polls in Karachi and Hyderabad.
The letter surfaced after reports that the Sindh government, which had earlier excused from holding LG polls citing shortage of security personnel due to flood-relief arrangements, had sent thousands of police personnel to Islamabad in support of PDM-led federal government.
The federal government, it may be recalled here, had sought security personnel from all provinces to secure Islamabad in the wake of PTI’s Long March which began yesterday from Lahore.
The ECP on October 18 had postponed the local government (LG) elections in Karachi scheduled for October 23. It was third time the ECP postponed the second phase of LG polls in Sindh.
The decision was taken following a third request by the Sindh government seeking postponement for three months of the LG polls in seven districts of Karachi, citing shortage of personnel.
