ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad District and Sessions Court on Wednesday handed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill to Islamabad police on two-day physical remand.
District and Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry heard the case.
Gill was previously sent on judicial remand by the court, however, the government approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and successfully pleaded before the court to reverse the decision as the investigators wanted to recover his phone.
The IHC directed the session court to reconsider the decision on the sending the suspect on judicial remand to Adiala jail.
The special prosecutor said the police were initially granted two-day physical remand. On the expiry of remand, the police had requested for an extension in remand.
He added that Judicial Magistrate Umar Shabbir had rejected the police’s request for the extension of his physical remand. The prosecutor maintained that the police are yet to recover Gill’s mobile phone, which has all the material relevant to the case.
Gill’s counsel Salman Safdar said they were not provided with the copies of statements recorded during the remand.
A case was registered based on the part of his speech, he said.
A sedition case cannot be registered without the approval of the federal government, Safdar said. The court should ask the prosecutor to tell if the permission was taken from the government, he added.
The PTI leaders including Imran Khan have claimed that Shahbaz Gill was tortured during custody of Islamabad police.
On Tuesday, on the request of Punjab Home Minister Hashim Dogar, two top officers of the Adiala Jail were removed from their positions for allegedly keeping Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) central leader Dr Shahbaz Gill at ‘chakki’.
It was learnt that Shahbaz Gill was illegally kept in a ‘chakki’ of the Adiala Jail, the special cells for ruckus-causing inmates.
