Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Laal Singh Chaddha, which is set to release tomorrow, is one of the most talked about films of the year 2022.
There is no doubt that ever since the movie was announced, it has received lots of backlashes. Now, the film is all set to hit the big screen globally except for Pakistan, let’s have despite all the propaganda, will Laal Singh Chaddha rule the box office?
Laal Singh Chaddha
Laal Singh Chaddha is an official Hindi adaptation of the popular Hollywood film The Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks.
Directed by Advait Chandan, its genre is Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama.
Laal Singh Chaddha has been filmed in more than 100 Indian locations. The film was initially scheduled for cinema release during multiple dates in 2020–2022, but kept getting delayed due to production halt caused by the pandemic.
#BoycottLaalSinghChaddha
Internet users have been trending #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha on Twitter since months now. The social media users have urged everyone to not watch the movie. Reason? Aamir Khan’s controversial “India’s growing intolerance” statement he made in the past is being circulated while a few of Kareena’s controversial statements from the past too have been dug up by haters.
Prior to that, Khan-starrer PK was embroiled in controversy, with Hindu outfits demanding a ban on the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Complaints were filed in several parts of the country, with the organisations alleging that the movie mocked Hindu gods and its contents were “highly provocative”.
Aamir Khan’s stance on boycott
Aamir Khan recently opened up on Laal Singh Chaddha boycott trend and said, “I am just keeping my fingers crossed and praying to the almighty and I am having faith in my audience.”
He further said, “If I have hurt someone’s heart with something, then I am sorry for that. I respect those who don’t want to watch the film but I want more people to watch it.”
Bollywood and unpredictable flops
Movies in Bollywood have become so unpredictable nowadays unlike the old times when no matter what the genre or what the dtoryline of the film is; if it features an Alister it will be a huge hit at the box office.
Now, a movie like ‘The Kashmir Files’ which emerged as the only Hindi movie in the pandemic era to cross the Rs 250 crore mark at the box office did not contain a huge budget but it did well.
On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut‘Dhaakad’ tanked at the box office and failed to earn less than 1 crore despite movie being shot with the budget of almost Rs 80 crores.
Then comes the latest movie of Ranbir Kapoor i.e. ‘Shamshera’ which was officially declared as a ‘flop’ just after 12 days of its release. The film could only earn INR 0.7 crore on Day 12 which takes its total collection to INR 48.5 crores.
Will Laal Singh Chaddha rule?
Coming back to Laal Singh Chaddha’s survival on the big screen despite being on the radar of being boycotted in India, it is early to say it will or will not lead at the box office.
Laal Singh Chaddha’s budget is pegged at around Rs 180-190 crore. The movie has already taken a lead over Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan in terms of advance bookings, with ticket sales in the region of Rs 5 crore for the opening day and Rs 8-10 crore for the extended weekend from August 13 to August 16, conversations with multiplex chains reveal.
Distributors and trade analysts estimated an opening for Rs 16-20 crore for Laal Singh Chaddha on Day 1.
