KARACHI: The main suspect in the Dua Mangi kidnapping case has been arrested while attempting to escape from Sindh to Punjab.
During checking on Karampur Link Road near Kandhkot, the suspect attempted to escape when police opened fire. He was subsequently arrested in an injured condition and shifted to hospital.
Police signaled a suspicious car to stop at Karampur road but the accused opened fire. He was arrested after a shootout. Six mobile phones were recovered from his possession, Police said the accused has been involved in kidnapping for ransom and other crimes.
On November 30, 2019, Dua Mangi was kidnapped by Zohaib Qureshi and his accomplices in Karachi’s Defense Housing Authority (DHA) area and was released after her father paid Rs2.5m to the kidnappers.
In January, Zohaib Qureshi had escaped from police custody by tricking officers into a false ‘shopping spree’ near Tariq Road and had been on the run ever since.
Zohaib Qureshi and his accomplices was being brought to the city court for a hearing. He managed to escape due to serious negligence of constable Naveed and Constable Zafar Habib, who were arrested on aiding the prime suspect.
Dua Mangi was 22 when she had been abducted outside a restaurant in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on November 30, 2019.
She was walking with her friend Haris Soomro on a street when the kidnappers pulled up and threatened them both with a gun. Soomro was shot by one of the kidnappers who abducted the young woman and fled.
In January 2021 an anti-terrorism court (ATC) indicted five suspects Zohaib Qureshi, Muzaffar, Tariq, Waseem Raja, and Fayyaz Qureshi for allegedly abducting Dua and demanding ransom for her release.
