ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reported the lowest death toll on Monday from the novel coronavirus in the current year as less than ten people lost their lives from the disease.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 698 cases and 9 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,269,234 while the death toll stands at 28,386.

The positivity ratio was recorded at 1.65% across the country. The rate has remained lower than two percent for the past eleven days. There were 42,095 tests conducted on the previous day, while more than 20.530 million tests have been conducted so far since the pandemic began.

The number of active cases in the country has dropped to 23,940 as the situation improves against the coronavirus. There are 1,574 people who remain in critical condition. Overall 1,216,908 people have recovered from the virus, including 666 in the past day.

Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases in the country. The province has recorded 467,818 cases and 7,551 deaths while there are 12,648 active cases.

Punjab has recorded 439,171 cases and 12,896 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has also reduced to 8,023. Islamabad has recorded 106,710 cases and 938 deaths while there are 398 active cases in the federal capital.

The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 177,519 and 5,720 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 33,196cases and 398 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 10,383 cases and 186 deaths while Azad Kashmir has recorded 34,441 cases and 740 deaths.

100 million doses

The pandemic continued its downward trend since the past week around the world. Pakistan crossed a major milestone of administering 100 million jabs during the nationwide coronavirus vaccination campaign.

Planning Minister Asad Umar said in a video message that the number of “fully vaccinated” people had now risen to 38 million. “Thanks to Allah Almighty, the number of vaccinations in the country today has exceeded 100 million,” Umar said. “It is very important that people who have taken one dose receive the second dose to get themselves fully vaccinated,” he added.

Asad Umar also underlined that a single dose or partial vaccination ensured limited immunity against the deadly contagious disease whereas the complete vaccination was necessary for complete protection from the disease.

He asked the partially vaccinated people to get their second Covid-19 vaccine shot to complete their immunisation. He urged the non-vaccinated individuals to get the coronavirus vaccine for the safety of their families, society and themselves as soon as possible.

Dr Faisal Sultan, the special assistant to prime minister on health, said that the government had done its best to protect the people from the coronavirus pandemic through an effective strategy.

He said 67.9 million Pakistanis, who form 45% of the country’s eligible population, have received at least one dose of the vaccine. He added that currently the pace of administering the vaccine doses has been accelerated.
