KARACHI: Police shot dead a young man in SITE area on Monday and declared him a mugger, as his family protested outside the local police station claiming his innocence.
Police claimed to have killed man identified as Sultan Nazir during a shootout. However, his family have denied the claims and alleged that he got killed during crossfire between police and the criminals.
The victim hailed from Khanabad area in Hunza and worked at a garment shop in Saddar. The family claimed he did not know how to use a motorcycle and have demanded that authorities take action against the responsible policeman.
SSP Keamari said that the motorcycle recovered from his possession was stolen while some documents which were snatched from a citizen have also been recovered from his possession. He said that a committee was formed under the supervision of Superintendent Police Baldia to ascertain the facts regarding the incident.
He said that strict action will be taken against the officials if found guilty. A FIR has been registered in the SITE Police Station against two police officials under Section 302/34 and Section 7 on Anti-Terror Attack.
The incident comes days after five Counter-Terrorism Force (CTF) officials were arrested for opening fire on a vehicle, leaving a youth dead in Islamabad.
The security officials shot multiple fires on a suspicious vehicle in Islamabad’s G-10 after allegedly trying to stop the driver many times. The case had sparked nationwide outrage against police brutality.
