The federal government has declared Wednesday, May 28, a public holiday in observance of Youm-e-Takbeer, as reported by national media on Tuesday.
According to details, there will be a nationwide public holiday on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer. May 28 was added to the list of general holidays in December 2024.
Notably, Youm-e-Takbeer marks the anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in the Chagai region of Balochistan, carried out in response to India’s nuclear tests. These tests established Pakistan as the first nuclear-armed state in the Muslim world and the seventh globally. The day is observed nationwide as a symbol of national pride and strategic strength.
As per the notification, all government offices, including local councils and affiliated departments, will remain closed on that day.
Previously, Youm-e-Takbeer was observed last year in remembrance of the nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, which made the defense of the country invincible. The day marked Pakistan’s emergence as the seventh nuclear nation in the world and the first Muslim state to achieve maximum deterrence for peaceful purposes.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif declared May 28 as Youm-e-Takbeer a day before May 28, 2024, as a public holiday commemorating the strengthening of Pakistan’s defense. In a statement, he said the day serves as a reminder of the nation’s unity in making Pakistan’s defense invincible.
The Prime Minister stated that on this day, the entire nation pledged to uphold the integrity of the country and that no compromises would be made under any external pressure regarding national defense.
