The confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus around the world surpassed 1 million – another grim milestone as the world grapples with the spreading pandemic.
Just before the global cases reached 1 million, the coronavirus worldwide death toll passed 50,000, according to the data compiled by a United States university.
The deadly virus has now infected at least 1,015,509 people around the world and killed at least 53,195 people, according to Hopkins data. More than 200,000 people have recovered from the virus so far.
The first case of coronavirus was reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan on 31st December. Since then, it has spread to nearly every country in the world, disrupting daily life for millions under lockdown – measures meant to curb the virus’ rapid spread.
United States, Italy and Spain are currently the most affected countries in the world from coronavirus.
Spain has passed 10,000 deaths, as the country recorded its highest one-day number of deaths since the outbreak began, with the total rising by more than 1,000 yesterday. As of this writing, the number of deaths stands at 10,348 with 112,065 confirmed infections.
The US has the most cases, and more than 1,000 died there in the past day. The hardest-hit country has recorded more than 5,900 coronavirus deaths. Confirmed cases are now more than 244,600.
