A Pakistani court has sentenced a woman to death in a blasphemy case under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Judge Afzal Majoka of the Islamabad Special Court, established under PECA.
The woman was convicted under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which prescribes the death penalty for blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs300,000.
She was also sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs100,000 under Section 11 of the PECA Act.
The woman has the right to appeal the ruling within 30 days.
It should be noted that Pakistan has requested assistance from Facebook and Twitter to help identify its citizens suspected of blasphemy, with the intent to prosecute or seek their extradition.
