Following General Asim Munir’s promotion to the rank of Field Marshal, questions have emerged regarding the duration of his tenure and the timing of his retirement. While the government has yet to provide clarity on the matter, Senator Faisal Vawda has asserted that the role of Field Marshal in Pakistan is not merely ceremonial but a lifetime appointment. He further claimed that all branches of the armed forces will now be subordinate to Field Marshal General Asim Munir.
Talking to a private TV Channel, Vawda said General Asim Munir’s elevation to the rank of Field Marshal has no term limit and the appointment is for life.
He further asserted that all military appointments, tenure extensions, and promotions will be decided by the Field Marshal. “This rank changes the command structure, and now all forces will be under the Field Marshal’s command.
He also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling him a smart prime minister and a capable administrator.
In Pakistan, the rank of Field Marshal (FM) is the highest military rank, awarded for distinguished service. While it is an honorary rank and does not come with additional powers or pay, it is granted for life and is held by only two individuals in Pakistan’s history: Ayub Khan and Asim Munir.
The senator also touched on the political climate, urging Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to open the path for dialogue and resolve national matters. He added that he did not see PTI Founder Imran Khan being released anytime soon.
It should be noted that following Pakistan great victory against Indian in the recent war, the federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to promote General Asim Munir as field marshal.
