It’s a common habit to store milk bottles in the fridge door, but experts advise against this practice, saying it’s actually a bad idea, according to kitchen appliance company Beko.
Salah Sun, head of product management at Beko UK, which manufactures fridge freezers and other kitchen appliances, says food wastage depends on organization of your fridge.
“Many people don’t realize that poor fridge organization affects more than just aesthetics—it directly impacts food longevity and household budgets.”
Experts suggest creating specific zones within your fridge to help extend the shelf life of your groceries. Temperature fluctuates throughout the fridge, so it’s important to store items in the right zones. The bottom shelf, being the coldest, is ideal for raw meats, while the middle shelves are best for dairy and prepared foods.
The fridge door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening. Experts recommend placing more stable items like condiments and drinks in the door compartments, while relocating milk to the middle shelf, where temperatures remain more consistent.
By maintaining optimal storage conditions, fresh produce lasts longer, reducing both food waste and the need for frequent shopping trips.
