A South Korean court has reportedly imposed travel ban on American YouTuber and Twitch streamer named Johnny Somali for “causing disturbance” at a convenience store in October.
Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, was “indicted without detention” on Monday, according to a spokesperson from Seoul’s Southern District Prosecutor’s Office.
“He was indicted on Monday without detention for creating a commotion at a convenience store in October,” a spokesman for the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ was quoted as saying by the AFP.
The incident occurred on 17th October when Somali allegedly confronted a store employee after she asked him not to drink alcohol inside. He is also accused of making sexist remarks toward her.
Somali, 24, has made headlines in Korea for a series controversial acts, including kissing and twerking by a statue memorializing Korean victims of wartime sexual slavery under Japanese occupation in World War II.
After drawing strong backlash, Somali issued an apology saying, “I want to apologize to the Korean people. I didn’t know the statue’s significance… it was just entertainment for my audience.”
But his apology was largely met skeptically by the local media, questioning his sincerity.
Somali had also caused controversy in Japan last year, taunting passengers on a subway with comments evoking the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
