KARACHI: A Pakistani journalist who had previously worked for leading media group but had to left the country is in spotlight again due to his story about tax leaks.
Back in 2017, when Noorani was in Islamabad performing his professional duties for The News when he was allegedly attacked and tortured by unknown motorcyclist near Zero Point.
Commenting on the incident, his colleague Hamid Mir had said that the incident had create a sense of fear among the journalists all over the country and the police has only included sections of attempting to murder. Police had also released sketches of the suspects.
In 2020, Noorani took an academic placement in the United States through the Alfred Friendly Press Partners, with support from Scholars at Risk, Protect Defenders EU, and CPJ. Although COVID-19 curtailed his activities, the support structure helped Noorani use his time to pursue an investigative piece exposing alleged controversial financial dealings of a former high-ranking official. He then left Pakistan.
In November 2021, reports of attack on Ahmad Noorani’s wife in Lahore again made newsflashes with journalists fraternity started reacting strongly over the incident. It was alleged that, in the jurisdiction of Ghaziabad Police Station Lahore, Ambreen Fatima wife of Noorani was travelling in her car when unidentified person raced towards the car and struck the vehicle’s windscreen three to four times with an iron object with the intention to cause harm.
However, there were controversies shrouding relationship between Ahmad Noorani and his wife Ambreem Fatima, as some reports alleged that they both had parted ways.
