Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has approved the construction of a new expressway connecting Karachi Port Terminal to Jam Sadiq Bridge, aiming to ease heavy traffic flow to the Motorway.
The decision was made during the 45th meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Board, which concluded with key decisions on infrastructure and environmental initiatives.
The expressway will stretch from the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Terminal to the Jam Sadiq Bridge, where it will connect to the Malir Expressway. The government has allocated 1.70 billion rupees for the project. According to the Chief Minister, 12.5 kilometers of the road will be elevated, with the rest constructed below the surface.
This expressway is part of a broader proposal by the Sindh local government to address traffic congestion at the KPT and ICI bridge intersections. The proposal includes the construction of the Mauripur Expressway and ICI Interchange in a PPP mode, providing quick and safe access from Mauripur Road to the Karachi Beach area.
The Mauripur Expressway will be an eight-kilometre, two-lane road in each direction, featuring a toll plaza and weight bridge. Moreover, a one-kilometre, two-lane (one-way) interchange will be constructed at the ICI bridge, with further plans for interchanges at Lyari Flyover and Kakapir Flyover, as well as a proposed elevated U-turn.
The meeting also decided to undertake afforestation along the River Indus in the districts of Jamshoro and Matiari, covering 34,995 acres. Reforestation activities will also be carried out over 88,022 hectares in riverine areas of seven districts across the province under a PPP model, according to the statement.
