The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to bring back the Yo-Yo test to improve the fitness of the players nationwide.
As per the plan, fitness tests will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, fitness tests will be conducted nationwide from July 11.
Fitness tests will first be conducted at the district level, followed by the regional level.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has approved the fitness plan as well.
What is Yo-Yo Test?
The Yo-Yo Test requires players to shuttle over a distance of 20 meters at varying speeds, covering a total of 2 km during the test. Fast bowlers must complete the distance in 8 minutes and 15 seconds, while other players have 8 minutes and 30 seconds.
In the test, two cones are placed 20 meters apart. Players run from Cone A to Cone B and then back to Cone A, starting with a beep. They must reach Cone B before the second beep and return to Cone A before the third beep. Each trip from Cone A to Cone B and back constitutes one shuttle, followed by a seven-second recovery period between shuttles. As the test progresses, the duration between beeps decreases, requiring players to run faster.
The test begins at level five with one shuttle, increasing in difficulty up to level 23. Level 11 includes two shuttles. The test becomes increasingly challenging with each level, and it ends once a player misses two beeps. To be considered for selection in the Indian team, players must achieve a score of 16.1 on the Yo-Yo Test.
The Yo-Yo Test was introduced by Danish soccer physiologist Dr. Jens Bangsbo in the 1990s.
